A few neighbors persistently endeavored to undo our CM posting efforts. W51 and D15, pivotal markers on reverse sides of the same pole, were stolen without a trace before several rallye cars got to see them, even though they were very early on the route. X25 was pulled down with a hockey stick by several neighborhood kids, then reposted at eye level with a note "We were here, signed the Hunters." We replaced all three with their backup copies as soon as we found out they were down, but strangely all three had met exactly the same fate *again* when we were back the next day to pull down the CMs. (Except the second X25's note simply said "Hello.") There was a fleeting temptation to post those markers yet again in the coming weeks, but we opted instead for the path of positive public relations. The disappearing CMs showed how very handy it is to have three co-rallyemasters. It's great to be able to have an RM in several places at once. The biggest unintended gotcha was the middle traverse. Because it was printed at the bottom of PI page 1, several people completely missed it when they were checking on PI 200 at the top of page 2. We were surprised by how many phone calls came in from folks looking for CMs for the Sutton PI when they hadn't even left the Kilo area. Not at all an intended gimmick this time, but a decent way to try to sneak one in in the future (though as something other than an SI...). Hopefully the small number of protests meant that folks found it to be a fairly tight rallye. And hopefully the surprisingly wide spread of scores among classes means that we did enough non-traditional gimmicks to keep the Master Experts on their toes. Thanks to: * Darin & Michelle McGrew for mentoring, prechecking, and working the checkpoint * Abby & Glen for working the checkpoint * Bob & Ken Schott for prechecking * Nick and Teresa Stefanisko for par plaques, awards, and Nick's scoring software * Bill Jonesi for par plaques * Steve Watt & Nancy Hanna for running registration and coordinating equipment, supplies, and printing. * Everyone who came out and participated! The protests: Granted protests W51 and D15: These CMs were removed by neighbors for part of the rallye, causing several rallyeists to get stuck at PI30, so no time penalties were applied. BH4: The argument was made that this should be a 0pt bumper rather than a -10pt fish, as there were several potentially reasonable justifications for getting this marker -- Conditional 45 already executed, deleting Kilo Av signs after recording as a CM could make the street unnamed and not an opp. RMs agreed with scoring adjustment. Partially granted protest X25: One rallyeist converted the binary numbers on signs to decimal when transcribing onto the scoresheet, making AA1010 into AA10 (on course) and J110 into J6 (no ECC), and bringing them immediately back to the CPU without getting the chance to execute PIs 100-110, and thus missing the opportunity to get X25, Y1101, Z11, and BC1 (up to 40 pts total). While we were impressed by this devious interpretation of the number gimmick, the definition only uses different radices to determine what is a valid number, but not to determine the actual value. Protest committee granted partial credit for "gimme" marker X25 (10pts), but not for other gimmicks, and RMs agreed. Denied protest P66: Request CM P66 because PI20 could not be executed while PI345 was in effect: higher on page of two equal insts must be done first. Protest denied by RMs and Protest Committee because both PIs were in effect and did not "conflict or coincide", so either could be done. Thanks again to everyone who participated! - Brian Underwood, Adam Riggs, and Beth Riggs, Rallyemasters If you enjoy rallying, tell a friend about it!
